LSF and Faith Lutheran Church

our beloved Faith Lutheran Church (this is a picture from their website)

Lutheran Student Fellowship and Faith Lutheran Church have a very close relationship. Faith is the church that most members of LSF worship with on Sunday mornings. Throughout the semester, students from LSF read the Bible lesson in church, lead contemporary-style worship services, sing in the choir, teach Sunday school, and help out with the youth group. Also, families from the congregation “adopt” students through our Adopt-A-Student program.

What can I expect at a Sunday service?
Sunday worship starts at 10:15am. Many people choose to dress up for church, but some people come in blue jeans. Our services are liturgical, which means that they follow a set order of prayers and songs every Sunday. If you’ve never attended a Lutheran church, you may be surprised to find that quite a bit of the service is sung by the congregation instead of spoken. Visitors are warmly welcomed, but don’t worry, we won’t ask you to stand up in front of the entire congregation. Instead, we have a time after the service with light refreshments where you can introduce yourself and chat for a little while. The congregation is very friendly and welcoming. Also, make sure to pay attention at the end of service for any important LSF announcements.

What kind of church is Faith?
Faith Lutheran Church is a growing, mission-minded, welcoming church in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS). In addition to its campus ministry outreach, the church supports a K-3 Christian school and is affiliated with three smaller congregations (Milan, Unionville, and Memphis) in the region. There are no other Lutheran churches in or around Kirksville, so members of all denominations are invited and encouraged to participate in the life of the congregation. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact the church (660.665.6122) or Pastor Lukefahr at revluke@sbcglobal.net.

Can I get a ride to church?
Yup – you sure can! Meet at the Lutheran Campus Center at 9:55am for rides to Faith Lutheran Church. If you have special needs or need different accomodations, we’re happy to help. Just email us or call the LCC at 660.665.6488. If you want to drive yourself, we have directions and a map for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to be Lutheran to be in LSF?
Nope. People of all backgrounds are welcome to participate in all of Lutheran Student Fellowship’s activities. We do have some fundraisers and events that we organize with Faith Lutheran Church, so feel free to attend whichever events you feel most comfortable with.

How big is LSF?
Lutheran Student Fellowship doesn’t have a formal membership roster (yet), but generally 30 or so people attend our events. Our weekly Bible Studies typically have between 10 and 20 people. Other events such as our annual Christmas Dinner bring as many as 60 students or more. LSF is big enough to host major events such as the longest-running CROP Walk in the nation, but small enough that you can know everybody in the organization. And if you don’t, just ask – we’re friendly!

How do you become a member of LSF?
From our Constitution: “…all persons shall be considered members of LSF if they are regularly active in an LSF activity.” In plain English, this means that if you come to LSF events on a regular basis, you’re in! We would love to see your shining face at our weekly Organization Meetings, which are held Sundays at 6:30 (after dinner) at the LuHo.

How will I know what’s going on?
Sleep on a couch at the LCC! Seriously though, we’ll keep you informed with our website, fliers in the dorms, word of mouth, and of course- email. We have a weekly email newsletter which lists upcoming events and announcements, and that is usually the best way to stay connected with LSF happenings, so be sure to sign up to recieve the LSF email.

Does it cost anything to be in LSF?
No. There are no dues, required fees, or contributions to be a member of LSF. While we wish that we were endowed with enough money to pay for all of our activities, T-Shirts, food, etc., that’s simply not the case. Ergo, for some activities (mainly our weekend retreats), we ask that you help pay your way. For example, our Sunday dinner is covered by the $2 that each student contributes. However, if you want to participate in an activity and you cannot afford to go, please let us know – we can always work something out.

Am I required to attend any activities?
Not at all. You can come to as much or as little as you choose. We strongly encourage you to regularly attend one Bible Study each week, join us for the events, come to church on Sunday, or just stop by the house at anytime. If you normally come to a Bible Study and you don’t make it, we’ll certainly miss you, but it’s not required.

What is Te Deum?
Te Deum is LSF’s on-campus musical prayer and praise service. It is held every other Tuesday while school is in session. You can find out more about Te Deum on our Bible Studies page.

How long has LSF been around?
Lutheran Student Fellowship has been at Truman State University since 1980. Before that, it was known as the Lutheran Student Movement since the 70s.

Where can I find out more about Faith Lutheran Church?
You can find more information here.

Purpose

Our annual Christmas Dinner

Lutheran Student Fellowship’s purpose is to provide opportunities for the study of and the spreading of the gospel on Truman State’s campus and in the Kirksville community. Less formally speaking, we are a group of students who love God, love each other, and try to find ways to serve both! Through weekly Bible Studies, service projects, mission trips, social activities, and a relationship with the local Lutheran church, we seek to provide a Christian atmosphere for spiritual growth and development.

What is LSF?

hanging out, playing games, same old same oldLSF has no official ‘membership’ procedures, no initiation rites, and most certainly no fees or “required” time commitments. To be active within LSF is easy: simply act- get involved with any of the opportunities provided and get connected through fellowship and the study of God’s word. You make as much of a time commitment as you want. The best ways to start getting involved include attending one of the weekly small groups or coming to our praise service on campus (Te Deum). To really form a bond with the other people in LSF and make lasting friendships (which is also a very big part of the definition of LSF) you may want to consider coming to Friday Fun Night events or even coming on the Spring Break Misson Trip. So I guess the answer to the question above is really up to you. You decide what LSF will be for you. God is at the center of it all and that is pretty much all the definition you need. Loving God, loving others….serving God, serving others. That’s what LSF is all about.
